Some novice divers will actually try to hold their breath while underwater, something that they should not do. Other than the fact that you are depriving yourself of oxygen, doing so can affect your buoyancy in the water as well. Some novices will also breathe in too much air too rapidly causing them to get lightheaded while in their suits. Keep these things in mind as you learn more about buoyancy and breathing in relation to scuba diving.

Be certain to equalize in the beginning of your dive and repeat frequently. Divers familiar with procedure would encourage a novice to do a means of equalization in advance of getting your feet wet.
