Movie Review (Synopsis):
KLOWN follows two wildly inappropriate friends – played by celebrated international comedians Frank Hvam and Casper Christensen – as they run amok through the Danish countryside, plowing through endless awkward confrontations and unspeakable debaucheries. Hopelessly wrongheaded Frank “kidnaps” the 12-year-old nephew of his pregnant girlfriend in an eager attempt to prove his fatherhood potential, and they join sex-crazed Casper on his secret adulterous weekend canoe trip. Rampaging through exclusive brothels, hospitalizations, armed robberies and even prison, the three paddle downstream from one chaotic misadventure to the next, all culminating in a surprisingly sentimental portrait of friendship and a final shocking reveal that you’ll never be able to unsee.

Frank and Caspar are best friends planning an epic canoe trip vacation to get away from it all (including their long-time girlfriends) and embark on a “Tour de Pussy” at a legendary, one-night-a-year, invitation-only brothel. Just before they leave, Frank discovers that his girlfriend Mia is pregnant, but hadn’t told him yet because she was trying to determine if he had enough father potential to raise a child. Desperate to show Mia that he is responsible enough to care for a child, Frank essentially kidnaps his 11-year-old nephew Bo to take him on their canoe adventure. Through both heartfelt connections and ridiculously irresponsible actions, Frank and Bo end up making a real connection.

The film played at Fantastic Fest, where Adam Charles laughed his ass off to its absurd male bonding, and Drafthouse Films picked it up for distribution. The movie, based on a television show, focuses on two men who are on a wild Tour de Pussy. Trying to boldly prove that he’s fatherly material to his girlfriend, one of the men kidnaps her 12-year-old son and brings him along.

Frank Hvam plays Frank, a thick-witted fellow eager to join buddy Casper (Casper Christensen) on a “canoe trip” that’s really just pretext for a weekend of high-end whoring. Two pre-trip events, though, kill the buzz: He learns that his girlfriend is pregnant, and (thanks to events best left undescribed) he gives said girlfriend good reason to doubt his ability to care for a child. So he kidnaps a kid they’re babysitting, 12 year-old Bo, in hopes that showing the boy a good time in the great outdoors will restore his girlfriend’s faith in him.

The premise, and the hijinks that follow, are about as outrageous as anything in today’s crop of raunchy comedies. But Nørgaard offers them with a much drier wit than Hollywood typically delivers, a tone well suited to his two leads (who created and starred in the TV series that led to this film). The pair enjoy an easy chemistry, with Hvam playing the dorky straight man to Christensen’s slick hedonist — the more the former tries to give pudgy Bo a wholesome nature trip, the harder the latter works to make his delusional “Tour de Pussy” dreams come true.

Frank is suddenly stranded with young Bo, a pudgy nine-year-old, on the day that the trip is to begin. While Casper is incensed and insists that he find a way to abandon Bo before they embark on the Tour de Pussy, Frank sees the opportunity to prove to his girlfriend that he is father material, and decides to bring Bo along. The two older men on their search for tail, and the boy, excited to go canoeing. Frank moderates his expectations to be in line with a man in his situation, Casper does not. Hijinks ensue.

It would be unfair of me to reveal any further plot details of Clown. The film plays in an episodic manner, with each episode revealing a little bit more of who these characters are, warts and all. The genius of this film is in these characters, Frank and Casper, who have been refined on Danish television for years in a TV series of the same name. Basically, both guys are assholes who make terrible decisions at every juncture. Casper is the alpha male asshole, and Frank, the beta male, but no less of an asshole. Their combined poor decision-making is recipe enough for comedy, but when you add the fact that they have a young boy in their care the whole time, all hell breaks loose, and the bounds of good taste are breached frequently.

Casper’s insatiable sexual appetite leads him into trouble on more than one occasion, and even when he thinks he’s got it licked (no pun intended), it comes back to bite him more than once. Frank’s insecurity leads him into just as much trouble, if not more as time goes on. Their relationship to Bo is a rollercoaster that oscillates between fatherly and antagonistic, but even that is fodder for some great comedy. When the need arises to atone for his misbehavior with Bo, Frank and Casper step up to the plate in an inspirational sequence involving drunken teenagers, a gun, and a prison sentence. The beauty of it is that it could all happen, if you were an asshole.

The film’s explicitness has been overplayed a bit in early buzz, but viewers will witness one sex act rarely seen in mainstream cinemas and, whether they want to or not, will briefly see what it’s like for a pre-teen boy to jump on the full-frontal-comedy bandwagon. Cue the laughs that fall somewhere between amusement and “here’s hoping this scene ends quickly.”

The beautifully obscene film plays out much like the British version of The Office in its visual style and pacing. Director Mikkel Nørgaard goes out of his way to put you into Frank, Casper and Bo’s journey. As successful as he might be in this endeavor, it also, unfortunately, places you in the lives of two of the most unlikeable characters I have seen on film in recent memory. As funny as the film is, it suffers from a case of douchebaggery of the highest proportions. If you were to run into Frank and Casper at a party, you would go out of your way to stay away from them.
