Movie Review (Synopsis):
In a time when America’s economy was crumbling and sense of community was in question, one guy left everything behind to see if he could survive solely on the support and goodwill of the 21st century’s new town square: Craigslist.
Craigslist Joe follows 29-year-old Joseph Garner, a man who sets out with no money and no friends to travel across the U.S. in search of community in the digital world. To find food, shelter and survive, he relies on ads posted on the online classified site, Craigslist. The film is shot over the course of his 31-day journey.
In a time when America’s economy and sense of community were crumbling, one guy left everything behind–to see if he could survive solely on the support of the 21st century’s new town square: Craigslist. It was in this climate that 29-year-old Joseph Garner cut himself off from everyone he knew and everything he owned, to embark on a bold adventure. Armed with only a laptop, cell phone, toothbrush, and the clothes on his back–alongside the hope that community was not gone but just had shifted–Joseph began his journey. For 31 December days and nights, everything in his life would come from the Craigslist website. From transportation to food, from shelter to companionship, Joe would depend on the generosity of people who had never seen him and whose sole connection to him was a giant virtual swap meet. Would America help Joe? Could he survive with nothing, apart from the goodwill of others?
This film has been written and directed by Joseph Garner, and executive produced by Zach Galifianakis. It seems to have quite a few nice moments about a regular guy attempting a modern day pilgrimage, who has high hopes about finding where America’s community has disappeared to. Given the current economic and social climates, this film’s idealistic approach to creating a documentary may be refreshing.
The trailer shows how the people in Joe’s life react to his plan. He meets some very interesting people during his journey, while seeing America and relying on the kindness of strangers. The trailer sets a hopeful tone for the film with Joe as a hero for a community that didn’t realize it needed one.
raigslist Joe follows Garner as he attempts to survive for a month with little more than a backpack, the clothes on his back and personal identification. He relies on Craigslist for food, shelter, wages and transportation. Garner wasn’t simply in search of an adventure, but rather to discover if a sense of community still existed in this modern era of social media where everyone is connected but communication has lost its intimacy. The characters he finds along the way are truly stranger than fiction. Craigslist Joe opens on August 2nd.
The film follows an ordinary guy named Joe on a journey around the country where he will live off Craigslist. Basically, he will have no money, no food, nowhere to sleep, and no set plans and rely on the people he can meet on Craigslist to survive. Sounds crazy and dangerous at the same time. I didn’t know what to expect exactly when I had heard the concept for this indie doc but after watching the trailer, I really want to see this film. It seems as if Joe meets a ton of people around the country that help him out just out of the kindness of their own hearts proving that their are good people still in this world.
Garner, 32, joined forces with funnyman-turned-executive-producer Zach Galifianakis for a documentary called ”Craigslist Joe.” Set to premier Aug. 2, the film follows Garner cross-country as he relies on Craigslist ads for food, a place to sleep and bathe, and more.
Garner is no stranger to the film industry. He was the assistant to director Todd Phillips on what he calls “a little movie at the time,” which turned into the blockbuster hit ”The Hangover.” It was on the set of “The Hangover” that Garner and Galifianakis first started discussing the premise for “Craigslist Joe.” Living in a hotel casino in 2008 while filming the movie, Garner said he felt isolated in Vegas.
He hired a cameraman he found on Craigslist a week before he set out on his journey. Equipped with only a laptop, a new cell phone with a new number he hadn’t shared with anyone, a new email address, a passport, toothbrush and the clothes on his back, Garner was ready to embark on his month-long adventure.
“We started off in L.A. I’ve lived here for over 10 years, and it was just very odd. I’ve never experienced L.A. as much as I did in those first four days,” said Garner. “It was about getting out of my routine and isolation in my own world and just opening up and realizing, ‘Whoa, there’s other things in front of us that’s happening.’ It was a good time to go, since our country was going through such rough times, and I wanted to find those stories and see how people were coping.”
The 31-day social media experiment taught Garner a few life lessons, especially as he visited the Ninth Ward in New Orleans.
“Everywhere I looked around the country were these pockets of inspiration. It’s one thing to see it on TV, or read it in the news, but I broke down in the Ninth Ward,” said Garner. “After a couple weeks of exhaustion, the amazing kindness that people shared with me I realized, here I am in the middle of this place that was once a totally amazing community that is just totally wiped out now. But these people are taking abandoned houses and creating them into art spaces.”
Many were skeptical that today’s self-involved society would be able to weather the storm without its traditional social supports. It was in this climate that 29-year-old Joseph Garner cut himself off from everyone he knew and everything he owned, to embark on a bold adventure.
