Movie Review (Synopsis):
Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone adapts author Don Winslow’s best-selling novel into this all-star ensemble crime drama about a pair of peaceful, Laguna Beach marijuana dealers who are targeted for extortion by the ruthless Mexican Baja cartel. Ben (Aaron Johnson) is a devout Buddhist and dedicated philanthropist, and his best friend Chun (Taylor Kitsch) is a former mercenary who trained as a Navy SEAL.
They may not seem like major drug dealers, but together they make a comfortable living selling top-quality marijuana. And they share more than just a profitable business; their mutual girlfriend Ophelia (Blake Lively) is more than enough woman for the two ambitious young entrepreneurs to handle. But just as Ben and Chun are feeling like they’re on top of the world, their blissful life of lawless hedonism threatens to yield dire repercussions. The Mexican Baja cartel wants a piece of the action, and their cruel leader Elena (Salma Hayek) has dispatched her top hatchet man Lado (Benicio Del Toro) to ensure that she gets it. When the cartel kidnaps Ophelia and threatens to kill her unless Ben and Chun comply, the desperate pot dealers enlist the aid of a shady DEA agent (John Travolta) to try and avert a tragedy. Emile Hirsch and Uma Thurman also star.
When their hippie girlfriend, O (short for Ophelia) (Blake Lively), is kidnapped, two marijuana growers – University of California, Berkeley graduate Ben (Aaron Johnson) and former U.S. Navy SEAL Chon (Taylor Kitsch) – confront a Mexican drug cartel formally called the Baja Cartel (led by Elena Sanchez (a.k.a Elena La Reina) (Salma Hayek) and Miguel (a.k.a. Lado) (Benicio del Toro) to rescue her. John Travolta plays a corrupt DEA agent.
Entrepreneurs Ben, a peaceful and charitable marijuana producer, and friend Chon, a former Navy SEAL, run a lucrative, homegrown industry – raising some of the best weed ever developed. They also share a one-of-a-kind love with Ophelia. Life is idyllic in their Southern California town… until the Mexican Baja Cartel decides to move in and demands that the trio partners with them. When the merciless head of the BC, Elena and her enforcer, Lado, underestimate the unbreakable bond of the three friends, Ben and Chon – with the reluctant assistance of a dirty DEA agent – wage a seemingly unwinnable war against the cartel. And so begins a series of increasingly vicious ploys and maneuvers in a high stakes, savage battle of wills.
Savages represents at least a partial resurrection of the director’s more hallucinatory, violent, sexual and, in a word, savage side. This intense and unavoidably gory adaptation of Don Winslow’s wild best-seller about the incursion of Mexican drug cartel mayhem into the United States has been made in a jagged, darkly trippy style that well expresses the story’s tense uncertainties. But the pronounced superiority of the veteran supporting players to the young actors playing the central romantic threesome throws the balance off and leaves a high-caliber-sized hole in the middle of a film that should nonetheless play well to blood-and-guts-inclined men internationally.
The trailer for Oliver Stone’s Savages shows the potential for a film that’s gritty, dark and violent. In this new featurette, John Travolta even uses the words, “the Pulp Fiction of now” when discussing the movie. Whether or not the movie lives up to that standard remains to be seen.
It seems fitting that Del Toro would bring up Natural Born Killers, given the implied focus on romance and violence in Savages. It does set the standard high, but it seems like a better connection to make than Travolta’s mention of Pulp Fiction, given the director. Then again, both NBK and Pulp Fiction released in 1994, so maybe there’s something to that. We’ll have to see how Savages looks.
The film stars Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson as two Laguna Beach marijuana kingpins who encounter a world of trouble when their shared girlfriend (Blake Lively) is kidnapped by a Mexican drug cartel. The movie looks like a fun change of pace for Stone, and a bit of a throwback to Natural Born Killers, but without the muddled message on violence and media. I wouldn’t be surprised if Stone has worked in a comment on America’s War on Drugs, but at least it looks like he’s surrounded it with a slam-bang action flick.
Laguna Beach entrepreneurs Ben (Johnson), a peaceful and charitable Buddhist, and his closest friend Chon (Kitsch), a former Navy SEAL and ex-mercenary, run a lucrative, homegrown industry–raising some of the best marijuana ever developed. They also share a one-of-a-kind love with the extraordinary beauty Ophelia (Lively). Life is idyllic in their Southern California town…until the Mexican Baja Cartel decides to move in and demands that the trio partners with them.
