Movie Review (Synopsis):
Seeking a Friend for the End of the World stars Golden Globe Award winner Steve Carell and Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley and is the feature directorial debut of screenwriter Lorene Scafaria. Set in a too-near future, the movie explores what people will do when humanity’s last days are at hand. As the respective journeys of Dodge (Mr. Carell) and Penny (Ms. Knightley) converge, the two spark to each other and their outlooks – if not the world’s – brighten.
Set in a too-near future where time at once stands still and is slipping away forever, the writer/director explores what people will do and how they will feel when humanity’s end is near. A 70-mile-wide asteroid is en route to Earth, and the last best attempt to counter it has failed. Also failing is the marriage of soft-spoken insurance salesman Dodge (Golden Globe Award winner Steve Carell); the breaking news that the world will end in an estimated 21 days cues his wife to leave him on the spot. Dodge is a man who has always played by the rules of life, while his neighbor Penny (Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley) is an extroverted woman who hasn’t. From these opposite perspectives, both initially choose to navigate the impending end of the world with blinders on. Dodge declines joining his friends in increasingly reckless behavior, while Penny fixates on her relationship issues with a self-absorbed musician. The two misfits meet first when Penny has a rough night and then again when she belatedly delivers Dodge a lost letter. That letter could alter Dodge’s future; it’s from his high-school sweetheart Olivia, the love of his life. When a riot breaks out around their apartment building, Dodge realizes that he must seek Olivia out before it’s too late while Penny makes the decision to spend her last days with family in England. Seizing the moment, Dodge promises to help Penny reach her family if she will provide transport for the two of them in her car immediately. She agrees, and they scape. On the road together, the unlikely traveling companions’ respective personal journeys accelerate, and their outlooks.
Stress-induced romantic hook-ups aren’t the only perks of the world ending, either. There’s slacking off at work, taking part in some cathartic looting, and who knows how many other base pleasures to partake in. Heck, this movie sees Patton Oswalt turning into some sort of hedonistic little Satyr, Gillian Jacobs kissing everyone on the mouth, and Connie Britton hosting dinner parties for her single friends. Not only are these all great ideas for how to spend your last days, they’re also glimpses at a movie that seems to have a stellar supporting cast. Neither hope nor species solidarity looms large in our current versions of apocalypse. In “Seeking a Friend” and “Melancholia,” and in Abel Ferrara’s recent “4:44 Last Day on Earth” — which uses an unspecified ecological catastrophe to do us in — the destruction of the world is a foregone conclusion; we’re all hospice patients, waiting for the inevitable and trying as best we can to tie up the loose ends of our dwindling lives. (Most of the characters in “Melancholia” don’t fully understand their plight until midway through the movie; for the one who does, a world-class depressive, the looming disaster functions as a kind of wish fulfillment.) The sense of numbed resignation in these movies is eerie, even when, as in “Seeking a Friend,” the characters are attempting to squeeze a few more drops of earthly pleasure out of their remaining days. The tone of Ms. Scafaria’s film is many shades lighter than that of “Melancholia” or “4:44”; it’s a road-movie romance, in which Steve Carell and Keira Knightley find true love in the nick of time. But its undertones are fully as dark.
all of whom had their parts to play in the pre-apocalyptic dramas of old — are conspicuous by their absence too. The disillusionment with institutions that might once have provided some hope of salvation, or at least a little reassurance, is sweeping, universal, absolute. We’re on our own. And with the end nigh, the world in these films feels weirdly depopulated, as if the apocalypse had already happened and the survivors were simply roaming the blasted landscape like the lonely pilgrims in “The Road.” Even in Manhattan, where “4:44” takes place, there’s not much sense of community, of people gathering to experience their grim fate together. Humanity is about to expire, but this time it’s personal.
“Melancholia,” which is set on an isolated country estate, actually uses the huge world-colliding planet, also named Melancholia, as a metaphor for the disturbed mental state of its protagonist, so everything that happens in the film appears to be of no more, or less, importance than the strange thoughts crashing into one another in her chaotic brain. Something like that is going on too in Jeff Nichols’s haunting “Take Shelter” (2011), which is either an end-of-the-world movie or an unusually vivid depiction of the inner life of a schizophrenic. Or both.
The film also stars Adam Brody (The OC), Connie Britton (American Horror Story), Rob Corddry (Hot Tub Time Machine), Gillian Jacobs (Community), Derek Luke (Antoine Fisher), Melanie Lynskey (Away We Go), T.J. Miller (Cloverfield), and Patton Oswalt (Big Fan).
