Before we delve into the applications of holistic or alternative medicine in treating rare diseases like mesothelioma, let us first gain an insight about what is mesothelioma and the existing conventional methods of it treatment. Mesothlium is the cavity lining of our major internal organs; the heart, the lung and the stomach which are also known as the pericardium, the pleura and the peritoneum respectively. Accordingly, mesothelioma, which, as the name suggests, is a cancer of the mesothelium, can be classified into Pleural Mesothelioma, Pericardial Mesothelioma or Peritoneal Mesothelioma depending on which organ has been affected. It is known to be caused by prolonged exposure to asbestos dust. With an average longevity of 6 to 12 months after diagnosis, most of the treatments of mesothelioma is palliative in nature, aiming at reducing the suffering of the patient rather than actually curing the disease. Although the recent advances in technology has made it possible to detect mesothelioma in its early stages and radical surgeries can be performed to remove the tumors completely, along with the affected organs as well, but it cannot be guaranteed that the tumors will not return or metastasize to other parts of the body. Till date, several treatments have been used to provide that much needed respite to the patient from the insurmountable pain. These treatments include radiotherapy using UV radiation or radioactive implants at the affected site, Chemotherapy, which can either be palliative or neoadjuvant, ie, to reduce the size of the tumor using cytotoxins priors to surgery. There is also immunotherapy, which uses Body Response Modifiers to stimulate the body’s immune system to counter the disease. And finally, there is Gene therapy, the costliest of all the treatments, which involves modifying or altering the gene responsible for the particular disease.

The latest addition to this list of treatments has been that of holistic medicine or alternative medicine as it is better known. This is used as a support and in combination with one or more of the conventional methods of treatments. Alternative treatment aims at overall well being of a person in terms of his physical, mental, social, behavioral, environmental and spiritual health. Although not yet whole heartedly embraced by the practitioners of conventional medicine, alternative medicine has often produced remarkable results through its unique techniques like chiropractic therapy, energy healing, reiki, acupuncture, herbalism etc. and as all conventional means to treat a rare disease like mesothelioma seems to be failing, the believers of alternative medicine are exploring the possibility of providing relief, if not cure, to the patients of mesothelioma. Holistic medicine attaches great importance to the effect of mental well being on the physical health of a person and thus, these alternative forms of medicine do not concentrate solely on the disease but rather aim at achieving an overall or holistic good health for the patient. It is believed that the treatment therapies under alternative medicine can and will have a palliative if not curative effect of mesothelioma patients and when all other avenues seem to lead to a dead end, alternative medicine can be turned to
