Purified Water and Fire
The word “Locksmtih” is actually made-up of two terms: Lock and Smith. A lock is a mechanism of protecting valuables and smith is a person who used to shape metal items so as the items can be used in complex appliances. Combining the meaning of both, a locksmith is a person who shape metal to build locks for a purpose of security.

The first-stage requirements in locks manufacturing is the furnace and moulds. Locksmith will first heat metal in the furnace till it reaches the stage where the locksmith uses tongs, anvil and hammer to shape it easily. Even after high temperature heating, hammering is done on the metal to bring it to the exact shape or design.  Tongs are used to pick the heated metal piece. Once properly shaped, the metal is then put into drinking (Purified) water; purified water doesn’t have unwanted minerals and thus will allow heated metal to get harden easily.

Moulds
The locksmiths use either hollow-out wooden blocks or moulds and pour the melted metal inside it. Once the melted metal gets hardened, it acquires the shape of the mould. With the approach, locksmiths can save lots of time and efforts. They now need not shape the locks using hammers and files as they were doing in earlier days.

The tools are more compact today
Tools of the locksmiths have significantly become smaller and easier to use now. Today, locksmiths do not require large furnace and purified water to make locks as well as keys. In fact, locksmiths need not to construct locks or design them unless they are engineers or family vaults. In most of the cases, locksmiths need to replace the damaged lock with the new one or repair the existing one with the mobile tools.

Every master locksmith has a lock pick set using which they can open almost any lock without its key. It is a lengthier needle type tool which is inserted into a pin tumbler to set it in the unlocked position. When all the tumblers are set in unlocked position, the lock opens. Some locksmiths also use decoder to measure the depth of shear line or to know the cuts. Based on the cuts and their depth, locksmith can make another key for the same lock and the client need not to spend money on buying new lock.

To construct new keys, all he needs to do is take a standard key mold and then use of a key-cutting tool to implement the cuts measured by the decoder.
