You probably wouldn’t believe it from how outsourcing in the Philippines has created such a buzz worldwide, but just ten years ago, this sector was hardly a blip on the radar. Now, outsourcing in the Philippines has emerged as one of the major players.

Dominating the Voice Services

Aside from dominating the voice services and emerging as “the call center of the world” – the title was from a New York Times article on outsourcing – the country has now become the second most dominant – secondly only to India – when it comes to complex services and non voice services.

The industry continues to post positive growth particularly in the non voice sub sectors such as software development, graphic design, animation, web design, typesetting, desktop publishing, legal services, shared services and composition.

This year, the Philippine Software Industry Association (PSIA) mentioned the following areas which have vast potential for growth:

1. Application enhancement

2. Remote infrastructure services

3. Maintenance

4. Support

The Philippines as a Vibrant Marketplace

The success in several sub sectors of outsourcing in the Philippines and the success of the entire business process outsourcing (BPO) industry in the country, continue to contribute to the growth of the Philippine economy. This, along with other factors such as the expansion of other areas of the service industry aside from BPO, the recovery of the manufacturing, food production in particular, and benign inflation helped push the Philippine economy towards 6.4 percent growth in this year’s first quarter according to a  National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) report. This first quarter figure comes second only to China, which posted 8.1 percent growth for Q1 and is the highest among the member-states of the Association Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Take note that despite the decrease in investments worldwide because of the crisis in Europe, the Philippines continues to emerge as a vibrant economy. The country, according to Citigroup Asia-Pacific’s head of global banking Farhan Faruqui, remains a strong marketplace for capital-raising and merger and acquisition (M & A).

What are the factors driving the continued growth of outsourcing in the Philippines?

* The industry seems to be heading towards maturity — going from mostly voice services in the beginning to, now, more companies in the country offering non voice services and becoming recognized as one of the global major players in the sub sector.

* Cultural fit continues to be another major factor.  Most Filipinos are simply more familiar with Western culture. They get Western humor and have grown up exposed to the language and culture through American movies, music, sports and TV shows. More Filipinos are likely to be aware of, for example landmark American legislature or key figures in American pop culture.

* The growing number of Filipinos that are tech savvy, technically proficient and more than capable of handling the more complex tasks required in sub sectors such as software services.

* Other factors that are not only driving growth now but will also play a major role in helping the further growth of the industry are additional infrastructure and business-friendly environment.
