Movie Review (Synopsis):
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” is supposed to be India’s answer for the UK’s most elegant retirees – a place where they can spend their golden years surrounded by lush amenities – that is, until seven retirees who are in need of a transformation find themselves on the front steps of the not-quite-ready resort. Thus begins a comic, romantic and poignant adventure in a land full of unexpected pleasures, brought to life by some of the most honored and accomplished screen actors of our time.
In a glum opening sequence designed to contrast dreary old England with colourful, exotic India, a pushy estate agent refers, somewhat implausibly, to “the grey pound”, and it’s this economic demographic the film sets out to attract and appeal to. Provided they don’t mind being patronised and stereotyped by a shallow but not wholly untruthful film, then this target audience will be satisfied. If, however, you’re of a certain age and looking for a 20th-century Passage to India or something in the manner of Merchant-Ivory-Jhabvala or another Jewel in the Crown, don’t sign on for this particular cruise.
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel follows a group of British retirees who decide to “outsource” their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive to find the palace a shell of its former self. Though the new environment is less luxurious than imagined, they are forever transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can begin again when you let go of the past. But this is a minor distraction. When the film, based on the 2004 novel These Foolish Things by Deborah Moggach, focuses on how the British retirees see India anew, it can be very interesting and funny in its own right. This is particularly the case when following the character of Graham (Tom Wilkinson), an ex-judge who lived in the country in his youth and is now quietly seeking an Indian man with whom he had a doomed affair. Heavy-lidded and paunchy, Wilkinson is perfect in his portrayal of a man oddly at peace with the country. But when Evelyn (Judi Dench) teaches a group of fawning call-center workers how to speak politely to British customers, or Muriel (Maggie Smith) transforms from an amusing racist biddy in a wheelchair to the best friend of an untouchable sweeper woman, the film relies on scenarios where foreigners get to civilize the willing natives in return for a little emotional catharsis.
