Movie Review (Synopsis):
An alcoholic novelist (Morgan Freeman) attempts to recapture his creativity by renting a cabin on Belle Isle, and strikes up a tender friendship with the single mother (Virginia Madsen) who lives next door in this bittersweet comedy drama from director Rob Reiner.
Monte Wildhorn, a famous Western novelist whose struggle with alcoholism has sapped his passion for writing. He takes a lakeside cabin for the summer in picturesque Belle Isle, and befriends the family next door-an attractive single mom and her young daughters-who help him find inspiration again.
In an effort to tap into his original talent, a wheelchair-bound author moves to a rural town, where he befriends a single mother and her three kids, who help reignite his passion for writing. The Magic of Belle Isle, starring Morgan Freeman and Virginia Madsen, will open the festival. Madsen will be on hand for the red carpet premiere and the presentation of the film at Paseo Herencia.
Acerbic widower Monte Wildhorn (Freeman) was once an acclaimed writer of Western fiction, but now sits in a wheelchair, nursing his regrets and expressing his bile with polysyllabic panache. He also sucks down sour-mash like a sink. Alcohol is a big part of this guy’s persona, but Freeman’s inherent dignity keeps him from playing the kind of pathetic drunkard Monte really ought to be. So right from the start — when Monte’s nephew Henry (the always wonderful Kenan Thompson) drops his uncle off at the lakeside cabin where he’s going to dogsit for the summer — the movie seems to be holding back.
The pic’s tendency to strive for comfort over conflict is particularly unfortunate as regards Madsen’s Charlotte O’Neil and the young actresses who play her daughters: bored teenager Willow (Madeline Carroll), tomboyish Finnegan (Emma Fuhrmann) and little Flora (Nicolette Pierini). The girls’ father is MIA, and all three of them have their issues. But it’s Finn who finds her creative/emotional outlet through Monte, who grumpily agrees to be her mentor and help cultivate her budding imagination.
The story here is, of course, a redemptive one. While there’s little sense of real romance between Monte and Charlotte (they call each other “Mr. Wildhorn” and “Mrs. O’Neil,” a device that grows precious over time), Monte responds to the love sent in his direction by the O’Neils, and he in turn helps the less fortunate. These include Carl (Ash Christian), the mentally impaired teenager who hops around like a bunny until Monte dubs him “Diego Santana, desperado,” and Carl stops being quite so annoying. It’s the kind of spiritually regenerative stuff that auds have seen a hundred times, and, at certain moments, it can be quite moving. The overall sense, however, is of a film that wants to be morally upright but isn’t above a little shameless manipulation.
Reuniting with his director from the hit film, The Bucket List, Morgan Freeman plays Monte Wildhorn, a famous Western novelist whose struggle with alcoholism has sapped his passion for writing. He takes a lakeside cabin for the summer in picturesque Belle Isle, and befriends the family next door—an attractive single mom and her young daughters—who help him find inspiration again. (Magnolia)
Freeman stars as Monte Wildhorn, an alcoholic in a wheelchair and “writer (of westerns) nobody reads.” His books, once popular, are now out of print. Monte’s nephew (Keenan Thompson) deposits him in the idyllic lakeside town of Belle Isle to housesit. Nephew’s ulterior motive, of course, is that he will be inspired to stop drinking and start writing again, but the embittered Monte is a hard case. “Toss it in the garbage,” he says of his typewriter. “She’s a black-hearted whore, and I’m done with her.”
Monte’s transformation does not exactly require a spoiler alert (especially if you see the trailer), but Freeman, the consummate character actor, can wring the bathos out of such dialogue as “That lady has a way of making me sit taller in the saddle.”
Screenwriter Thomas’ lone big-screen credit was the excruciating 1980 comedy “Wholly Moses!” To have Reiner agree to direct this modest addition to the “summer that changed our lives” genre, must have been the answer to a prayer. Reiner, like Garry Marshall, but without the one-liner gag reflex, is an old-school crowd-pleaser who knows how to get the laugh and jerk the tear, sometimes shamelessly. At one point, Monte, being kissed in a dream, awakens to that dog licking his face.
“The Magic of Belle Isle” is getting an on-demand video release before a limited theatrical run in July, reflecting a belief that a small scale film like this — driven by character and actual conversation — has a better chance of finding its audience in the comfort of home than in theatres during the sound and fury and 3D of the summer movie season. “Belle Isle” is all about the comforts of home and its simplest of pleasures may be best appreciated within the confines of a smaller screen.
Freeman, as ever, only makes it look simple. His sage voice is this film’s sole special effect, as witness his oration at a neighbor’s funeral, his mentoring of Finnegan to use her imagination to “see what isn’t there,” and his description of how Madsen’s character walks into a room. In a summer of superheroes, he emerges as a true wizard. His performance is the real magic of “Belle Isle.”
