The manganese resources of China assume an uneven distribution and are predominated by medium- and small-sized ore districts. Although Mn ore deposits have been found in 22 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China, most of them are distributed in the southern part of the country, especially the Zhuang Autonomous Region of Guangxi and Hunan Province, whose Mn reserves make up more than a half (56.6%) of the total. Consequently, mining has been undertaken mainly in these two regions. In terms of the scale of ore districts, there are only 7 large-sized (more than 20 million tons of reserves) ones and all the rest are medium or small in size, so it seems to be difficult to employ modern industrial techniques in the exploitation. In China, manganese ores are of poor quality and usually have complicated compositions and textures. Among the total retained reserves, lean ores constitute 93.6% and rich ores (Mn content 30% for manganese oxide ore; Mn content 25% for manganese carbonate ore) make up only 6.4%.
