Movie Review (Synopsis):
Movie about the heroic story of a dictator who risked his life to ensure that democracy would never come to the country he so lovingly oppressed. It is inspired by the best selling novel “Zabibah and The King” by Saddam Hussein.
In details :
Young Aladeen became supreme leader of the African country of Wadiya at the age of seven. Since then, he has ruled his kingdom with an iron fist. Anyone who disobeys him is tortured or killed. Over the years, he has made friends with fellow leaders such as Kim Jong-il and Moammar Gadhafi. He has also made a lot of enemies within the United Nations over his country’s nuclear weapons program. He is ordered by the UN to speak to the delegation or military action will be enforced. So General Aladeen decides it is best for his Kingdom to come to America.
But conspirators within the regime want Aladeen taken out. So an assassin is hired to kidnap, torture, and eventually kill the supreme leader. Aladeen outwits the would be assassin and escapes, but not without losing his signature beard. General Aladeen races to the UN in order to give his speech, but no one believes he is who he is. A riot breaks out and a young shop owner and activist named Zoe helps him out and gives him a job. It is now up to Aladeen to infiltrate the UN and ensure democracy is never established in the county he has oppressed.
Baron Cohen plays General Aladeen, the tyrannical ruler of the oil-rich north African rogue state Wadiya, who is intensely irritated by the western powers’ infatuation with the Arab spring. This political annoyance is compounded by the stress of having to keep Osama Bin Laden in one of the spare rooms in his obscenely opulent palace after the Americans took out one of the al-Qaida leader’s doubles.
His confrontation with Washington has reached a crisis after a speech in which he announced Wadiya was just months away from enriching uranium, and then corpsed and giggled uncontrollably when trying to claim that this was for “clean energy purposes”.
Faris plays Zoey, a liberal idealist with a good heart who runs an organic, vegan grocery store in Brooklyn. When she meets General Aladeen (Baron Cohen) at a protest, she thinks he’s a refugee and jumps at the opportunity to help him.
While the new trailer repeats a lot of the same scenes that have been put in the film’s previous advertising, the red band version sees a few changed to be more offensive, and it gives us a glimpse of a couple completely new cases of Cohen rubbing your nose in his bad taste. There are jokes made at the expense of women, people riff on the tragic day of September 11th, and we get gross-out gags about ass-play during the miracle of childbirth. All in all, The Dictator looks like it’s going to be pretty disgusting.
There is some great material in the time-honoured movie tradition of people in a tight spot making up false names from signs that they just happen to see.
It is gasp-inducingly offensive when the general plays his terrorist Wii in the palace and selects a game called “Munich Olympics”. We hear screams of “meshuggeneh”. Inevitably, Aladeen later explains, sentimentally, how living in New York has taught him to love Yiddish because the words sound like what they mean.
But, at the same time, it looks like it’s going to have moments of disgusting hilarity. As long-in-the-tooth as Cohen’s schtick has started to get, his willingness to push even the most taboo of buttons is always good for at least one or two big belly laughs. You know…as long as you’re not one of those wimps who gets offended at things.
The Dictator turned out to just be a series of in your face raunchy jokes ran together with a forgettable story. Now don’t get me wrong, I love crude dick and fart jokes, but Sacha Baron Cohen seemed to not have any real imagination with his character. General Aladeen was nothing more than a ruthless oppressor just looking for a cuddle partner.
The main problem with The Dictator is the absolutely forgettable story. The film started strong with the origin story of General Aladeen growing up, obtaining power, and even holding a sporting even in his honor. Real life news clips of Barack Obama and other leaders were edited in to give an almost documentary feeling. My interest was piqued.
