Using An External Backpack

Anyone who has gone on a hike knows how important it is to have an organized and light load. Hiking long distances or rough terrain is very draining. And having to lose time fumbling through a backpack, or constantly having to adjust the items in it, can be frustrating. Not only are you losing time, but you’re also losing energy.

So if you want to make the most of your hiking trip, and make sure you focus your attention on the trail rather than on your load, be sure to have a neat and lightweight external backpack. It will definitely make your experience more enjoyable.
External packs were designed to carry heavy loads of up to 40 pounds. They provide more protection and support and have a better weight distribution compared to a frameless strapped bag. External packs are very common in the military and mountaineering but have recently been designed for hiking.

Aluminum and other lightweight metal alloy are used to construct the frame of an external pack. Reinforced synthetic polymers are also used. The packs are equipped with an arrangement of straps and tautly-stretched netting to prevent contact between the metal frame and the wearer’s back. Not only does this design make things more comfortable, it also creates air circulation between the frame and the user’s back.

The fabric portions of external frame packs are usually smaller than those of internal frame packs. However, external packs have exposed frame portions above and below the fabric sections to house larger items. The majority of external packs can be customized to the configuration of the user’s load. For instance, the military uses external frame designs because they have the ability to carry loads of different shapes, sizes and weights.

When you use your external backpack for a hiking trip, you need to make sure you gather everything you might need. The first items you should pack are shelter and clothing. You should place your tightly bundled tent and sleeping bag in the pack. Then pack breathable and quick-drying clothing. You’ll need to bring a jacket and should also pack a rain poncho to cover yourself and your pack in case it rains.

Then you need to pack food and water. You should only bring food that is easy to eat. Pack dry foods, canned or pouched items, fruit, trail mix and granola bars. Keep in mind that canned food will add more weight to your load, so try to keep the number of cans to a minimum. Package your food into plastic zipper bags. The most important thing to pack is plenty of water. It’s crucial to stay hydrated when hiking.

Regardless of what you plan on putting in your external backpack, just be sure to keep things light and organized. Keeping your pack tidy and a manageable weight will make your adventure a pleasant one.
