Movie Review (Synopsis):
“A Bag of Hammers” revolves around the friendship of two charming grifters, Ben and Alan, played by Jason Ritter and Jake Sandvig. Ben and Alan have built a successful though larcenous business, posing as car valets, only to steal the vehicles instead of parking them. Because of their less-than-ideal childhoods and a “job” that allows them to remain likeable boyish rogues well into their 20′s, their penchant for crime is almost forgivable. However, everything changes when they meet a twelve-year-old boy named Kelsey.
Neglected by his mother, Kelsey is drawn to Ben and Alan and they to him–eventually, Kelsey becomes part mascot, part protege. His presence ultimately forces Alan and Ben to choose between a life of crime and fun (an extended childhood) and the opportunity to grow up and deal with the emotional consequences that come with it.
In Details, Ben (Jason Ritter) and Alan (Jake Sandvig) have been buddies for years, living in the same California home adjacent to unemployed single mother Lynette (Carrie Preston) and Lynette’s 12-year-old son, Kelsey (Chandler Canterbury). Ben and Alan are scammers. They stand outside the local cemetery with a sign stating “free valet service,” but when the car keys are turned over, they flip the sign into the car, drive it to Marty (Todd Louiso), a fence who pays cash and who will “move” the car to another owner after making adjustments. Alan, who looks like a young Jim Carrey, is regularly counseled by his waitress sister Mel (Rebecca Hall), who wants him to give up a life of crime and get married. When Lynette commits suicide, Alan and Ben informally adopt Kelsey—who looks like Jodie Foster. Kelsey is thrilled to have someone finally care for him, saving him from the clutches of the authorities and from his busy-body 6th-grade Social Studies teacher, Wyatt (Gabriel Macht). The question is: will Kelsey, an adorable but needy kid, manage to redeem his temporary new parents, convincing them to give up their life of crime?
Carrie Preston is held back by the script, which has her going on job interviews, even cursing out the human relations counselor for asking whether she knows basic office machinery like Excel. To see Preston at her best, watch her in any of the five episodes of “The Good Wife,” which features her as a highly competent lawyer who is regularly distracted and in need of Ritalin. She “makes” the episodes.
In this film, Ritter and Sandvig are small-time thieves who steal cars at funerals and make quick cash in other ways. Neither are ready for the real world. Then one day, a young boy (Canterbury) walks into their yard when he should be at school. Turns out, the boy’s mother is divorced and highly neglectful. So the young men take the child in and get some help from a struggling waitress (Hall) along the way.
Rebecca Hall is one of my favorite actresses, and I think she is very underrated. She was terrific in films like “The Town” and “Everything Must Go”, and in the latter showed she can play the light and heavy side more than adequately. I also love seeing Amanda Seyfried pop up for a bit in the trailer. Seeing her in a small, limited role like this might cleanse the palate from some of her recent misses at the box office.
