What are flare stacks?

How does it function?

When the volume goes beyond, the valves open and redirect the pressure to the flare headers. The gases go up and combust at the top of the stack. 

What are the different types of flare stacks?

Utility flare: This is the most basic type of stack. Its size relies upon the radiation and dispersion of pollutants at the ground because of the burning process. The size of the tip is also dependent on the exit velocity of the flare and the acceptable pressure drop.

Smokeless flare: Commercial facilities developed this type of flare to reduce the dark fumes and other pollutants from the burning process. Various types of smokeless flares are on the market, depending on the purpose and the form of excess gas or liquid.

Portable flare: This type is essential for private places. This has a base with two ends, using a tubular channel to connect the flaring and gas connection tips. It is simple and light, making it easy to carry from one location to another. This is also suitable for burning small amounts of extra gases in a short duration.

What safety and security regulations are involved in flare stacks?

Altitude is important when constructing flare stacks. The columns have to be at a significant distance off the ground for secure burning of toxic gases. Improper installation of these columns might cause dangerous impacts to the environment. Portable flare stacks should only be used in distant areas, as it can induce adverse reactions to exposed people. Proper maintenance of pilot ignition and similar components is also necessary to prevent equipment breakdown.
