Your Home Improvement Project – Working Smart and Safe

  • Comments 0

When you do a home improvement project, dont get caught only focusing on the project itself. Any successful project can only be accomplished by understanding the individual parts. Most of the time after starting, you will discover some overlooked detail that is merely annoying. Sometimes, however, small details that we overlook become big problems. Problems like these are not easily forgettable and may have a variety of consequences that follow. Doing things like this tend to occur because of ritualistic habits. Lets take a look at some common home improvement issues we often see.

We always like talking about safety with home improvement because many people are injured and even killed every year due to simple accidents at home. While taking even the smallest of safety precautions may seem boring or like a waste of time, safety should always be your number one priority. When working with power tools, extra precautions should be taken when changing out parts or pieces, be sure to unplug the tool before making any changes to the tool. For safetys sake, dont skip this important step. Working with circular saws naturally requires extra safety precautions. Heres a handy tip: Cover the unused blade of the circular saw with a piece of old hose. Slice the hose open and then wrap the hose around the unused blade. Use a ladder at your own risk. The only thing you can do is take precautions to minimize those risks, and that is really all anyone can do. Prior to climbing a ladder, always do a quick inspection. Cracks may develop on older ladders or ladders which have been stored outdoors. Extra care should be taken with folding ladders, be sure the ladder is opened to the fullest. Be sure to lock the metal braces before climbing up the ladder.

An additional safety issue we need to address is the use of potent bonding agents and adhesives. When you do your pre-work preparation, figure out what you will need to protect your house and yourself and anyone else who will be helping you. If you are working with strong chemicals adhesives and glues, make sure you buy the right kind of protective gloves. Heavy-duty latex gloves are good, or you can ask someone at the home improvement center what they recommend. Some of the places to find what you need to work safely with chemicals – such as the latex gloves – are Home Depot, Ace Hardware, and Lowes Home Improvement Center. Some of the chemical agents you might have to use can be carcinogenic, so be aware. Also, a more immediate hazard is the chance of chemical burns to your skin. Dont be foolish and forget to wear a mask respirator with an attached filter cartridge whenever you are working in close quarters without proper ventilation.

This quick overview in no way covers every possible safety hazard that exists. Being safe is about preparing and working hard, all the while being aware of potential safety hazards. To avoid any type of injury or death, make sure you do not take shortcuts when working on your home improvement project.
